While all eight of these Celtic holidays may not be truly ancient, several of them certainly are; some, like Samhain, have had Christianizing veils cast over them but have kept many of the pre-Christian customs associated with their celebration. Interested harpists will find a wealth of available information about these holidays, their names, and their customs. Imbolc, February 1st or 2nd, is also the Feast of St. Bridget or Brigid and is associated with the ancient goddess of that name in Celtic mythology.Ostara is the name sometimes given to the neo-Celtic celebration of the Spring Equinox. This piece depicts the dawn of the day and of the year. Beltaine, the joyous celebration of spring’s warmth and wealth of flowers and new greenery, occurs on the first day of May. The longest day of the year and the shortest night mark the Summer Solstice-Midsummer. Since long before Shakespeare’s funny and lyrical play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Summer Solstice has been associated with magic.Lughnasadh, on August 1st, is the festival of the first harvest. A version of the name of this festival survives in Manx and Scots Gaelic as well as in Irish Gaelic, and the name itself derives from Lugh, one of the most important Celtic godsMabon marks the Autumn Equinox and the end of summer; for me, it is a wistful moment of the year-extremely beautiful yet transitory. Samhain is one of the most significant celebrations in the Celtic year- the word itself means the end of summer, the beginning of the dark part of the year. It survives even in non-Celtic countries as Halloween, thanks to its adoption into the Christian calendar as All Hallows’ Eve. It is said to be the time when the veils between this world and the next are at their most thin.The Winter Solstice is marked in many European cultures as a time for celebrating the birth of the new light and a time for decorating with evergreens like holly. For The Holly King, modal and traditional versions of the carol The Holly and the Ivy, were used because of the lyrics’ references to the rising of the sun, and the running of the deer.

A nice collection of American tunes that we sometimes neglect to honor as a rich part of our heritage. Red River Valley has an easy solo version, and an intermediate solo version, both of which can be played together as a duet. Streets of Laredo has an easy solo version and three other versions of a more difficult nature, any of which can be played together, or one after another for an elongated performance of the tune. Shenandoah has an easy harp solo rendition and a version with large chords in the right hand. They can stand alone or be played in duet form. Arkansas Traveler/Turkey in the Straw medley is a clever stand-alone solo. Camptown Races has a very easy solo adaptation, plus two other versions just a bit more challenging, though not much. For Amazing Grace, there is an easy key of C version, a pedal harp key of C version, and an easy key of G version. There is a lower intermediate key of G secondo part, as well as a modulation to the key of C.

A collection of Scottish tunes from the nineteenth century and earlier have been carefully selected for their suitability on harp. They lay well under the fingers, are enhanced by the rhythmic and tonal properties of the plucked string and its overtones, and are musically interesting. Airs were chosen for their melodic beauty. Arrangements are traditional in style with ornamented melodies, open chords, and spare harmonies. Tunes are given in two keys, one in all naturals or one sharp, the other in one or two flats. Suggestions for fingering are given, levers or pedals need to be set only at the beginning of each piece, except for the Boat Songs, which require one lever or pedal change. Finally, historical and performance notes on the music are provided, together with a list of sources that are available from U.S. or Scottish distributors.

Your audiences will love these popular classics! These beloved melodies have been arranged in progressive key order so that the book can be played as a continuous set of background music at a gig. However, individual tunes may be selected as separate musical renditions and selections omitted as desired. These arrangements strive to capture the "flavor" of the original source works and yet retain a strong melodic component. The selections are derived from orchestral, opera, operetta and art song compositions. Attempting to transfer them to the harp is a challenge due to the unique characteristics of the instrument. Wonderful tunes that came out of nineteenth century America. Many of the pieces are well known, but received a fresh setting that would be playable on the harp. A few tunes are less well known, or even obscure, but were chosen for their artful melodies. The arrangements translate well on the piano as well as the harp, and Mr. Sullivan also includes guitar chords and lyrics. You'll revive the "Parlor Tradition" of days gone by and make these old tunes live again is part of your own musical tradition. There is a brief historical paragraph on each tune. One interesting piece is the "Persian Princess Waltz." It is from a 1901 method book for the reed organ. This method book was discovered in Mr. Sullivan's garage and was autographed by the author, Mattie Pirtle.
